from book one : the way to the middle : part 1-D :

adam

I'm going to begin with the human body. No geometry there, you may think; just flesh and blood, veins and nerves, organs and then all those abstract qualities like feelings, ideas, love, work, longing ...
I've named him Adam. Eve might work, too, of course. But Adam seemed a bit closer to fit the theme : geometry.
Adam was naked, we read. And so was Eve - until a certain evening when a resistant fruit core lay undigested on the ground before them.
Many people are still naked, especially in tropical regions, where the geometries of the body are not hidden by grey suits or rich gowns. There the numbers and the proportions of the body are allowed to play their games, and most likely they help support an awareness and, also, a respect of human values that clothes are keeping at some distance.
The question is not whether Adam and his Eve have existed in this world, or not. The main idea here is that the average(?) male body carries a story, an old, timeless story which may reveal images unseen. Like the Earth globe or the Great Pyramid the human body is a mention of accompanying codes, invisible and yet seen because the music of the score cannot be silent regarding them.
Now, allow me to present you to Adam. Adam, where are you ...?

I'm right here ... in the image You gave me. At last I know.
Mr Darwin and his disciples insist that I've descended from some hairy animals up in the trees. But I've taken care of the sign. Your image. It's become my secret sign of memory, a mark of identity on this journey.
How did I discover it? To be honest, it was Eve, of course. She saw it. Since then it has been impossible not to see it. I see it on her body, too, but to look at her offers a range of other feelings, as well. I've been so near-sighted! - so focused on what it is in these ground-level relations that really counts ...
I'm grateful that you gave her to me. She has even helped me see. Her vision may be quite different from mine, but I'm learning from that, too. And since she saw the sign on my body we've come up with new questions and new answers.
It all began one day on the shore. I was sitting drawing figures in the sand. It was the hexagon. It had fascinated me for weeks, but I couldn't see why. Then I became aware of Eve peeping over my shoulder and I felt sort of embarrassed, feeling she might think I was a bit childish. Suddenly she burst out, "Adam ... oh gosh, do you see what you've made!"
I didn't understand her and simply took her hand in mine. Then it struck me that she had seen something that I hadn't been aware of. "What d'you mean?" I stuttered. "Don't you see ..." she said, "don't you see the Sign!" And she sat down in front of me shining like a sun.

Still I understood nothing. Then she rose, touched my shoulder, sat down again, pointed at the figure in the sand and said, "This was it : the Sign He gave you." Silently she began crying.
I felt like being a clumsy boy. But a strange idea had began germinating in my mind. The Sign? I thought. The Sign He gave me. Did He give me a sign? How could I have forgotten ...? "Please explain," I whispered.

Slowly she pulled herself together. And then she spoke, "I've seen it for a long time already. But I didn't know, not consciously, until this moment. This is it ... You see these levels, five different levels, and the four equal zones here in this hexagon - from bottom to top. It's your Sign, Adam. I've been watching your body while you were sleeping. Everything fits in. I'm dead sure ... may I try a drawing of my own here?" "Of course," I replied.
Then she filled in ... the shape of a body. A sitting body. And the levels of reer, navel, nipples, throat, top of head. I just looked, abashed, as if struck by a lightning. I immediately felt I had understood something. And I knew she had made one of our most important discoveries since that dark night when we were expelled ... the moment when this long journey began.
